Baldur’s Gate 3 fans defend Wyll after player explains why they kicked him out

Baldur’s Gate 3 players are coming to Wyll’s defense after a Reddit post accusing the character of discrimination garnered attention.

It’s no surprise that a game likeBaldur’s Gate 3would leave players incredibly invested in their personal favorite characters. While companions like Astarion andShadowheart are obvious favorites, even more divisive characters have their defenders.

This is something that’s been made even more clear after one player shared their dislike of theOrigin characterand potential companion Wyll. The admission prompted plenty of responses (and various jokes) from fans who were quick to defend the Blade of Frontiers and argue that the player had misinterpreted his character.

Note, spoilers for Wyll’s storyline to follow.

Wyll fans say haters misunderstand his character and storyline

The outpouring of Wyll love was promptedby a poston the BaldursGate3 subreddit titled “Why I kicked Wyll out of my party.”

In it, the poster explains how Wyll frustrated them while playing as a tiefling, calling him a hypocrite formaking a deal with the cambion Mizoraand accusing him of prejudice for “saying to my face that his horns make him too fugly to socialize.”

Of course, Wyll fans did not stand for the slander. Many pointed out that Wyll’s sadness over his transformation comes from being publicly marked as someone who made a deal with a devil, not an inherent dislike of those with horns like tieflings.

In fact, Wyll’s horns are said in-game to make some of the tieflings in the Grove uncomfortable, as his devilish horns remind them of those who enslaved them in Avernus. This ledone commenterto note, “OP is literally complaining that Wyll isn’t being racist by equating Tiefling with devil.”

Others pointed out that, even if Wyll “chooses to be mopey and sad” and “Kills the vibe of my Tiefling party,” all of the companions have their flaws and can be annoying.

Asone playerputs it, “Lae’zel is outright racist to the Tieflings, Shadowheart is constantly making snide remarks, Astarion literally tries to kill you.”

This even led to apost parodying the original, with a user jokingly explaining why Wyll might want to kick the player-made avatar out of the party.

While there are valid criticisms of Wyll’s character development andrelative lack of contentin comparison with other companions, most seem to appreciate what is there.

Wyll is one of the few characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 who is simply nice, and many find the fact that he made his pact in a desperate and selfless attempt to save his home to be tragic and a welcome departure from most Warlock stories that center on ambition and lust for power.

All this serves as a reminder to those criticizing characters on the internet that the fans will find you.
