Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #2
Summary
Star Warshas just revealed one ofDarth Maul’smost brutal Sith trials. Trained by Darth Sidious in the years beforeThe Phantom Menace, Darth Maul didn’t remain idle while waiting for his master’s carefully laid plans to come to fruition. Instead, Maul was honing his lethal skills and growing in his powers through the dark side of the Force.
As seen in Marvel Comics’Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #2by Mark Russell and Carlos Nieto, the titular Dark Lord of the Sith lays siege to a remote Republic colony located in the outer reaches of the known galaxy.Mowing down several of Moonbender Colony’s protectors known as the Remainders, Maul eventually emerges the victor with his foes having all been slain. Upon messaging his master,Maul learns the true purpose as to why Sidioustasked him with obliterating a colony the rest of the galaxy had forgotten:

According to Sidious, there was no obvious advantage or resources to be claimed at Moonbender. The entire assault was merely a test to see how Maul would fare against multiple different combat styles.
Maul’s Arrival Was The Beginning Of The End For Moonbender Colony
Home Of The Remainders
Landing his ship directly in front of Moonbender’s fortress with a dark confidence, there was no secrecy with Maul’s arrival at the remote Republic colony. Home to the Remainders, the colony’s protectors were largely made up of former bounty hunters, soldiers, and mercenaries, all of whom were the last of their groups to have survived before coming to this forgotten corner of the galaxy. As such, it’s not much of a surprise when theRemainders choose to stay and fight Maulonce they receive his message to either leave the facility or die.
Believing that they had the upper hand, the Remainders gathered their weapons and prepared themselves for a quick brawl. After all, Maul was a mysterious yet singular being who’d come to their colony. However, the Remainders couldn’t have anticipated his speed and strength granted to Maul by the dark side of the Force, allowing him to cut them all down one by one with his blood-red lightsaber.

Moonbender Was Simply A Sith Trial Designed By Darth Sidious
Testing Maul’s Combat Abilities
Although the entire issue is set up as though Moonbender had something Sidious desired, the fact that the entire confrontation was merely a Sith trial to test his apprentice’s skills is quite dark. That said, the remote fortress and its unique array of defenders makes for the perfect scenario for testing Maul while still ensuring that the Sith’s presence would remain hidden from the Jedi Order. Showcasing the full extent of his growing power in the dark side, this new issue ofBlack, White & Redperfectly provesjust how formidable Maul was in the overallStar Warscanon.
