Diablo 4’s Goblin event borrowed the wrong features from Diablo 3

March of the Goblinsevent inDiablo 4has evolved into a fan-favorite feature, and the 2025 version is pretty stacked.

It’s got moregoblin types, a reputation system for even more rewards, and cross-realm availability, which we love to see.

Diablo 4 greed

They even made some goblins a permanent addition, so the fun doesn’t entirely disappear once the event wraps up. Good moves all around.

But if you’re going to borrow from Diablo 3, why stop at just the goblins? The real MVP of D3’s goblin content wasn’t just smacking those little loot piñatas – it wasThe Vault.

Diablo already designed the Goblin feature that makes me sweat bullets

In Diablo 3, goblins weren’t just walking loot sacks. If you got lucky, they’d open a portal toThe Vault, aka Greed’s Domain.

Aka, the literal treasure trove of your demon-slaying dreams.

It wasn’t just a fun little side area – it was a core part of what made goblin hunting so addictive. You’d step into this gilded dimension stuffed with gold, gems, and legendary loot, only to cap it all off with a fight against Greed, the demon lord of treasure.

Sure, color-coded goblins tell you what you might get from certain goblins.

Treasure Goblins

But the Vault was chaotic, rewarding, and – importantly – it made every goblin encounter a thrilling possibility.

Diablo 3 players could also force open The Vault anytime by using a Puzzle Ring in Kanai’s Cube. That meant even if RNG wasn’t on your side, you could still guarantee yourself a golden ticket now and then.

Diablo 4 gold cap

The sheer satisfaction of stepping into a realm overflowing with loot? Diablo 4’s goblin event doesn’t match that level of dopamine rush.

Diablo 4 players are so bored they’re breaking core game mechanics for fun

I won’t pretend the 2025 March of the Goblins event isn’t fun – it absolutely is. But without something like The Vault, it’s missing that extra magic that made goblin farming in D3 so damn exciting.

Right now, goblins in D4 are just loot piñatas that scatter some goodies and disappear. But imagine if they couldalsoopen a portal to a loot-filled dungeon. That would elevate this event from “fun” to “I-need-to-call-in-sick” levels of addiction.
