TheGame of Thronesspinoffin question is10,000 Ships, a show that takes place a millennium beforeA Song of Ice and Fireand follows the troubled odyssey of Nymeria and the Rhoynar people as they flee from recent defeat and try to find a home elsewhere. After its announcement back in 2021, the project was seemingly scrapped, even as writer Brian Helgeland said the script he wrote for it “came out great.”

Never having won a Pulitzer Prize myself, I am at a loss to explain why the medal shows Ben Franklin rather than Joseph Pulitzer, but Eboni has promised to fill me in after the ceremony. She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, a GAME OF THRONES spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar. We’re all very excited about this one… though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles.

Game Of Thrones' 10,000 Ships Explained

Who is Nymeria?

With Booth, a proven and talented writer, Martin and the rest of the creative team could have anotherGame of Throneshit likeHouse of the Dragonon their hands.

Writer Helgeland said that10,000 Shipswas initially envisioned as a Moses-inspired epic, swapping the Biblical figure for Nymeria. Helgeland described the story of the spinoff as Nymeria and the Rhoynar trying to find a new home like the Israelites leaving Egypt. While it’s not clear if Booth’s pilot will follow the same foundation, the expansive lore of Westeros will no doubt be referenced as the show pushes through development.

Game of Thrones Franchise Poster

Taking place a thousand years before the events ofA Song of Ice and Fire,10,000 Shipswill most likely follow the legend of Nymeria and the Rhoynar after their defeat by the Valyrian Freehold in the Second Spice War. The Rhoynar saw early victories in the war, but they were ultimately defeated by a force full of 300 dragons commanded by the dragonlords of Valyria.Nymeria escaped Essos with many surviving women, children, and elderly, eventually settling in Westeros' Dorne, which is more commonly known as thekingdom of House Martell.

10,000 Shipschronicles a story and the actions of a character that’s uniqueeven to what’s already beenseen inGame of Thrones. Adapting the legend of Nymeria and her ten thousand ship-voyage should make for intriguing television. With Booth, a proven and talented writer, Martin and the rest of the creative team could have anotherGame of Throneshit likeHouse of the Dragonon their hands.
