House Of The Dragon Season 3’s Renewal Is Hardly A Surprise

Though It Demonstrates Great Confidence From HBO

In and of itself,House of the Dragonseason 3’s renewal is hardly a surprise. Martin, who is credited as a co-creator and executive producer, revealed in December 2023 that he was already working on the third and fourth seasons with his co-creator Ryan Condal and his writing staff. Martin previously said that four seasons is the ideal number for the show to properly adaptthe Dance of the Dragons. Given Martin’s comments, it’s assumed that HBO is privately committed to his four-season plan, although not publicly.

However, the timing of season 3’s renewal is notable. In April 2022, season 2 was officially renewed five days after the season 1 premiere generated over 10 million viewers, the highest premiere for any HBO show ever. With season 3’s renewal coming four days before the season 2 premiere, HBO is demonstrating great confidence in Condal and company. Now, the network doesn’t need to see the season 2 premiere’s viewership numbers and is confident enough to give season 3 an early greenlight.
