Parks and Recreationactor Patton Oswalt reminisces about his character’s accurate prediction ofAvengers: Infinity War’s plot several years before theMCUmovie was even written.Avengers: Infinity WarandAvengers: Endgameculminated the Infinity Sagaby bringing together all the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. The Infinity Saga’s two-part finale wasn’t exactly planned since Phase 1, as it took shape as each individual movie and crossover event got one step closer to Thanos' arrival.

In an episode ofJimmy Kimmel Live, Patton Oswalt recalled how hisParks and Recreationseason 5 character, Garth Blundin, unveils his Marvel/Star Wars crossover fan fiction to prevent Leslie Knope from changing Pawnee’s laws. While the scene was completely improvised by Oswalt in April 2013, Oswalt’s Garth Blundin correctly guessed thatthe MCU would see Thanos gather the Infinity Stonesand fight the Avengers. Patton Oswalt explains:

“Some things weirdly came true; some on purpose, some by accident.” (…) “They had not doneGuardians of the Galaxy. When I say Time Gem, they cut to Chris Pratt. This was way before he didGuardians.” “Also, Amy has the funniest line in the whole thing when she says ‘the female part’s a little underwritten’, which was so exactly what those movies were.”

Every Correct MCU Prediction From Patton Oswalt’s Parks & Recreation Filibuster Scene Explained

Patton Oswalt Accurately Predicted Marvel And Star Wars Plot Details At The Same Time

In theParks and Recreationseason 5 filibuster scene,Patton Oswalt’s Garth Blundin explains how Thanos could visit theStar Warsuniverse, saying that the Mad Titan could use the Reality Gem to jump between realities. Thanos does acquire the six Infinity Stones inAvengers: Infinity War, though he can only use the Reality Stone to create illusions, not to alter the fabric of reality permanently. The Multiverse Saga later explained that characters can jump between universes through other mediums, including time travel and magic.

Garth mentions Tony Stark’s"time ribbon", which sounds like a similar concept to the Möbius Strip that was key to Stark’s invention of time travel inAvengers: Endgame.

Oswalt’s Garth Blundin also explains how Tony Stark would assemble a top-tier Avengers team that would include Spider-Man, and not"second-tier superheroes"like Hawkeye and Black Widow. At the time,Spider-Man’s integration into the MCUseemed almost impossible, yet Marvel Studios and Sony reached an agreement just three years later, which allowed Spider-Man to join the MCU Avengers. Curiously, Hawkeye is absent fromAvengers: Infinity War, and Black Widow dies inAvengers: Endgame. Garth then mentions Moon Knight, Daredevil, and Hercules, all of whom have been introduced in the MCU since then.

The extendedParks and Recreationfilibuster scene also includes a mention of the Fantastic Four, as well as the X-Men arriving on the Quinjet — a minor mistake from Oswalt, as the Quinjet is the Avengers' signature aircraft, while the X-Men use the Blackbird. Regardless, both the Fantastic Four and the X-Men are being incorporated into the MCU, only a little later thanAvengers: Infinity War. Chris Pratt’s presence in the scene adds another layer of meaning to the scene, as the actor would later play Star-Lord in theGuardians of the Galaxymovies,Avengers: Infinity War, andAvengers: Endgame.
