Summary

David Duchovny reveals his thoughts on his character’s future inThe X-Files. Duchovny played Fox Mulder, the FBI Special Agent who served alongside Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully. The two navigated the world of the supernatural in their original show from 1992 to 2003, as well as in two movies and a series revival from 2016 to 2018. The show was so popular that it spawned two spin-offs,MillenniumandThe Lone Gunmen. One continued issue behindThe X-Filesproduction was thebehind-the-scenes tension between Duchovny and Anderson.

It has been six years since the revival ended, and Duchovny still loves Mulder and the rest of the show. In an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter,Duchovny is open to exploring Mulder at this age. He believes that anX-Filesrevival could suit the 2020s as well as it did the 1990s, but he does not spend much of his time pondering its direction. Check out his full quote below:

The X-Files - Mulder and Scully in Season 9 Finale

I don’t wake up and wonder, “Where is theX-Filesstock today?” But I love that show. I don’t know what my character would be like at my age. It’s an interesting question. That show can address the present as well as it addressed the ’90s. It just depends on Chris [Carter] or the other writers. I’m always like, “Hey, let’s see.”

Will The X-Files Ever Be Revived?

The X-Files Might Return, But Duchovny May Not

The future ofX-Filesmight be uncertain, but a revival would not be the first instance of the show returning after an ending. In 2016, Fox released a six-episodeX-Filesminiseries, which also served as season 10 and takes place afterThe X-Files: I Want to Believe(2008). It led to the 10-episode season 11, but the show never continued on after that, asGillian Anderson elected to retire from the franchise. Since that series came to an end, it has been reported that a newX-FIlesrebootis in the works fromCreeddirector Ryan Coogler.

The X-Files: What Happened To Mulder and Scully After The Series Ended

There was a 14-year gap between The X-Files' original end and its 2016 revival, and here’s what we know about what Mulder and Scully did in between.

It would be difficult to revive the universe without bringing Anderson back as Scully. The dynamic between the two Special Agents is what makes the show so compelling, as one serves as the believer and one as the skeptical agent shying away from the supernatural. That dynamic was shattered in season 7, after Scully admitted the existence of aliens, but it was a long development that made them more interesting partners. If Anderson does not return for anX-Files reboot, Duchovny will have little reason to. However, Anderson is open to possibly working with Coogler on the reboot.

Duchovny spoke toScreen Rantabout the reboot and wished nothing but luck to the actors, as Disney asked for his “blessing” before proceeding with the show. If it does succeed and brings life back to the franchise, there will always be opportunities for cameo appearances that can reveal exactly what happened to Duchovny’s Mulder in the years sinceThe X-Filesended.
