Both Iron Fist and the Punisher debuted in the 1970s, and quickly became two of Marvel’s premiere street-level heroes. The Punisher began as a Spider-Man villain, but fans nevertheless took to him, and he was headlining three titles at the peak of his popularity. In the past decade, the Punisher has courted controversy and calls to retire the character. Iron Fist, created to cash in on the martial arts fad of the early 1970s, found greater fame after he teamed up with Luke Cage as the Heroes for Hire. Danny Rand, the first Iron Fist, is now retired.

Iron Fist and the Punisher made the leap to live-action during Marvel’sDefendersSaga, which consisted of six television shows that, while standing on their own, told one larger, overarching story. Both Punisher and Iron Fist received shows as part of the initiative. The Punisher, starring Jon Berenthal as Frank Castle, was critically acclaimed, butIron Fist, starring Finn Jones as Danny Rand, failed to land with critics and fans. After the Saga concluded, the show’s canonicity was ambiguous, but as the characters slowly trickle back to the MCU, the time is ripe for a Punisher and Iron Fist team-up.
