Few engineers in theStar Trekuniverse can rival Montgomery Scott, but Nog has proven himself worthy of Scotty’s legacy. Nog, the nephew ofDeep Space Nine’sFerengi bartender, went from zero to hero in theStar Trekfranchise. Nog’s service record in the Dominion War has come to define him, but inSons of Star Trek#3, he demonstrates his engineering prowess.

Sons of Star Trek#3 is written by Morgan Hampton and drawn by Angel Hernandez. Nog is trapped in an alternate universe where the Federation is at war with the Breen. Stuck as an officer aboard theUSS Avery,Nog is on the frontlines when the Breen attack the ship, dismantling its warp engines. Nog andLieutenant Shaw brainstorm waysto get the engines back online, when Nog remembers how ships in his universe can recrystalize dilithium.

This feature is lacking in ships in this universe, so Nog rigs up a theta-matrix compositor, which restarts the engines.

Nog Is aStar TrekIcon, and Maybe the Best Example of Its Progressive Ideals

Nog Gets His Engineering Skills From His Father, Rom

Star Trek: Deep Space Nineis regarded for its forward-thinking storylines and large, sprawling cast. Unusual for such a large ensemble, everyone grew as a character, and Nog’s arc was one of the best. His father, Rom, was an employee of his brother Quark, Nog’s uncle. Had Starfleet never come toDeep Space Nine, Nog would most certainly have become a criminal. However, thanks to the influence of Starfleet and Jake Sisko, Nog will become something greater. Played by the late Aron Eisenberg, Nog would become one of the best developed characters onDeep Space Nine.

Nog shows what he is made of inSons of Star Trek#3, helping restart theAvery’swarp engines, using an engineering method from his universe. Nog is a skilled engineer, just like his father. During the Dominion War, Rom was instrumental in helping mine the wormhole, which kept reinforcements from the Gamma Quadrant at bay. Rom conceived of the technology used to create the mines, potentially saving many lives in the process. Judging from Nog’s makeshift theta-matrix compositor, the apple did not fall far from the tree.

Star Trek’s New God-Killing Weapon Could Destroy Scotty’s Legacy

Scotty’s reputation in the Star Trek universe is untouchable, but his most recent innovation could potentially tarnish his legacy in a big way.

Nog Did Not Want to be a War Hero–But That Is What He Is Known For

Nog Is a Galaxy-Class Engineer–Just Like Scotty

The true tragedy of Nog’s life, as revealed inSons of Star Trek#3, is that he will never live down his Dominion War service record. Viewed as a war hero, many underestimate Nog’s abilities as an engineer. This is unfortunate, as Nog went to Starfleet Academy to be an engineer, but instead is known as a warrior. Yet this issue shows that Nog is far more than a war hero, and is an actual, Scotty-level engineer. Scotty saved the day in numerous classicStar Trekepisodes, and Nog is proving he is cut from the same cloth.
