Gul Dukat is one ofStar Trek’sgreatest villains, but an alternate timeline has transformed him into a Starfleet hero. In IDW’s newSons of Star Trek, Q Jr has hurled Jake Sisko and his friends into a decidedly different universe. Here,Dukat is not only a Starfleet captain, but as seen inSons of Star Trek#3, he is arguably one of its best.
Sons of Star Trek#3 is written by Morgan Hampton and drawn by Angel Hernandez. Throughout the book’s run, Jake has been in shock that, in this new universe, Dukat serves in Starfleet. After Jake and Dukat finish a shouting match, the two talk. With cooler heads prevailing, Jake explains to Dukat why he is so disturbed. Jake tells Dukat all his Prime counterpart did, including being a genocidal dictator.

This Dukat is taken aback by this, but then swears to Jake he will do everything in his power to return him to his home universe.

Dukat, played by actor Marc Alaimo, once presided overDeep Space Nine(then known asTerok Nor) during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor. When the Cardassians pulled out of Bajor, the station was handed over to the Federation. Yet Dukat did not want to give up so easily, especially when the Bajoran wormhole was discovered. Over the next seven seasons, Dukat would flirt with redemption, but ultimately his ambitions got the best of him. Dukatallied the Cardassians with theDominion, a move that would seal their fate as a galactic power.
Dukat is widely regarded as one of the franchise’s greatest villains, even above Khan and the Borg Queen in some fans' estimations.

Jake’s recounting of Dukat’s crimes reinforces the horrors he perpetrated duringDeep Space Nine’srun. Not only did Dukat damn the Cardassians, but he killed Jadzia Dax as well. When Dukat realized the game was up, he went mad and his later possession by the Pah Wraiths made him even more dangerous. It is a testament to the “nature versus nurture” debate: Dukat is a leader in any universe, but in the one depicted inSons of Star Trek,he is benevolent and cares deeply about those around him. Growing up under the Federation’s influence, Dukat realized his full potential. In many ways, it makes Dukat a tragic character in theStar Trekuniverse. In another time and place, he was a great hero.
