Summary

Despite the general success of Bethesda’s newest open-world RPG,Starfield, some notable flaws have even devoted fans of the developer’s games levying heavy criticisms against it. For someStarfieldplayers, the game is heavily lacking in terms of exploration, combat, and narrative, and can end up feeling like a shallow experience - not helped by lackluster balance when it comes to the game’s core combat systems. In particular,Starfield’s melee weapons are a major pain point, falling heavily behind ranged options and lacking the variety and customization that other weapons get to have.

Luckily, like other Bethesda games,Starfieldhas a robust modding community, and the Melee Weapons Revised mod bysamuel181093(via Nexus Mods) goes a long way towards making the game’s melee weapons more interesting and varied. Generally, the mod divides melee weapons into two distinct categories - lighter weapons, like knives, with lower base damage but higher critical damage, and heavier weapons with the opposite, creating more of a distinction between them. Additionally, thoughStarfield’s already-existing quality system doesn’t apply to melee weapons for some reason, the mod rectifies that issue, allowing players to find more powerful variants.

“An Instant Classic”: Starfield Review

Starfield has plenty of captivating tales and dynamic mechanics that make it an epic science fiction adventure - and an instant classic.

Starfield’s Melee Combat Can’t Be Fixed Without Larger Changes

A New Mod Improves Starfield’s Melee Combat, But Can’t Fix It Entirely

Unfortunately, while the mod can go a long way towards patching upStarfield’s lackluster melee combat, it would need to be of a much larger scale to fix them entirely. Problems like the general lack ofmelee weapons, with only nine melee weapon types in the entire game, and the lack of differentiation between different types, would require much larger changes. At the same time, changes on that scale would likely entail an overhaul of the entire melee combat system - something which might currently be outside the potential scope ofStarfieldmods.

A little less than a year sinceStarfield’s release, the game’s mods are still working on a relatively small scale compared to other Bethesda titles, most notablySkyrim, owing toStarfield’s Creation Kit updatestill being in the works. With few exceptions, mods forStarfieldhaven’t yet progressed to the point of massive gameplay overhauls, instead working mostly within the game’s already-existing systems to make more subtle tweaks and improvements. With more official content for the game yet to come out, including at least oneStarfieldDLC, it’s likely that mods will continue to grow in scope as the game’s lifespan continues.

In lieu of more comprehensive changes, however, Melee Weapons Revised still does a good job in makingStarfield’s melee weapons more viable, interesting, and varied, providing players with actual reasons to use some weapons over others depending on their build and playstyle. While the system would probably require something close to a complete overhaul to be on par with the game’s other weapon options, melee enthusiasts playingStarfieldshouldn’t overlook this newly released mod.

Starfield

Bethesda Game Studios presents Starfield - the first original IP from the studio in twenty-five-plus years. Set in the year 2310, the United Colonies and Freestar Collective are observing a shaky truce after a war set 20 years prior. The player will customize their character as a member of a space exploration team called Constellation while navigating The Settled Systems and the conflicts between the warring factions. According to Bethesda, players can explore over 100 systems and 1000 planets to find resources and build their ships, living out their own sci-fi journeys.
