Burrell:“We’re so in love with these characters and I think with Hoa as our are Captain it would be amazing. There’s three books, there’s going to be more, Viet is obsessed with these characters.”

Downey:“But we are right now focused on just getting ‘The Sympathizer’ out to the world and seeing hopefully that everybody appreciates it. There’s more story to be told for the Captain’s journey in this world, but right now it’s like anything. I’ve been part of other things that have had sequels, you just have to get the first one right, you can’t look too far past that or you’re going to mess something up.”

Could The Sympathizer Run For Multiple Seasons?

As in the first novel, HBO’sThe Sympathizerseries follows the Captain (Xuande), who flees to the U.S. with his general near the end of the Vietnam War, though he continues to operate secretly as a spy. The story focuses on the turmoil that the Captain has to contend with while living a double life. Helped by Xuande’s dynamic performance,the story inThe Sympathizerleads to moments of hilarity and also profound sadness.

Asequel novel, titledThe Committed, was released in 2021. The story follows the protagonist as he arrives in Paris. Haunted by memories of the Vietnam War, while also struggling to see where he fits in the world, the protagonist takes after the approach of a French intellectual and tries to navigate the complexity of living in a French society.
