Memorably fusing to become the arrogant but powerful Gotenks, Trunks and Goten haven’t had much of a starring role in a series that continues to favor Goku and Vegeta and the insanely powerful forms they inexplicably keep unlocking. Aged up a bit to their teenage years in therecentDragon Ball Supermanga arcwhere they acted as the superheroes known as Saiyaman X-1 and Saiyaman X-2,it’s starting to feel like Trunks and Goten will be getting their due soon, making Kakeru’s fanart that much more satisfying to see.
Drawing the “kid” versions ofTrunks and Goten fromDragon Ball Z, Kakeru illustrates these half-Saiyans in action as they rush towards a destiny they’re both clearly ready to face. Holding his iconic sword as he runs, Trunks smiles wide while wearing an oversized Capsule Corp shirt, looking back at his friend playfully as he turns on the afterburners. Not to be outdone at the start of their adventure, Goten closes in on Trunks with pure delight etched across his face, with his unique white and black gi combo giving fans something new for the character that simply works.

Whether Trunks and Goten are going on a day trip, chasing down a criminal, or partaking in an important mission for their dads,Kakeru does a commendable job capturing Goten and Trunks’ fun and free spirit, with Kakeru’s professional art style sealing the deal. It remains to be seen ifTrunksandGotenwill be more or less of a focus asDragon Ballenters an uncharted era without its influential creator —the late Akira Toriyama—at the helm, but it’s good to see that the fanart community is ready with some great ideas should the manga need them.

Dragon Ball
From the creative mind of Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball is a mega multimedia franchise that spans back to the 1980s. Dragon Ball expanded quickly, starting as a serialized manga for Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan. It made its way overseas via manga and an anime adaptation that is enjoyed worldwide. Dragon Ball was the initial starting animated series that followed the adventures of the young Son Goku as he sought after the Dragon Balls. These mystical orbs would grant the wish of any who gathered them together. Then, the series would branch off into the immensely popular Dragon Ball Z, which followed Goku as an adult and featured high-intensity battles and Goku’s never-ending search to be the strongest. The series has also enjoyed several popular video game adaptations and continues to release several new animated series and theatrical films up to the recent popular Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
